Classes F.A.Q.

What classes are available in World of Warcraft?
The classes in World of Warcraft are warriors, mages, druids, death knights, hunters, warlocks, priests, paladins, rogues, and shaman. Visit the Classes page for more information, including details on specific classes.

Are there any "sub-classes?"
There are no sub-classes, per se, in the game. However, players of the same class can differentiate themselves by choosing to specialize in three different trees of talents. A priest, for example, has access to talents in the holy, discipline, and shadow trees. One priest could become a "shadow priest" by specializing in shadow talents, while another could become a "holy priest" by focusing on holy talents. All classes can specialize through talents, and can change their talents at any time by paying a fee to a class trainer.

Are there any non-combat or "pacifist" classes that can gain levels from healing wounds, curing disease, "buffing," or by providing any other type of assistance to other players?
No. It's possible to gain experience in parties and raids by healing but you will likely have to solo and kill monsters on your own at some point.

What classes have the power to bring someone back from the dead?
Priests, shamans, paladins, druids, and warlocks all have the power to bring other characters back from the dead. The method and frequency with which they can do so varies by class.

Which classes can heal?
The classes that have the innate ability to heal are:

  • Priest
  • Druid
  • Shaman
  • Paladin
  • Death Knight (themselves)
  • Warlock (themselves and their pets)
  • Hunter (their pets)
What are the close-combat oriented classes?
Warriors, rogues, paladins, death knights, feral druids, and shamans do their fighting up close and personal with the enemy. Warriors and rogues, in particular, have a host of melee abilities.

What classes are considered ranged attackers?
Mages, hunters, and warlocks are the primary ranged attacking classes. Elemental shaman, balance druids, and shadow priests can do damage from range as well.

Can every class solo?
Yes, all classes will have the ability to solo through the game. Efficiency in soloing may be affected by talent specialization.

What classes can dual-wield?
Rogues, death knights, warriors, hunters, and shamans (with talent) can learn to dual-wield.

Will there be ever more classes added to World of Warcraft?
Wrath of the Lich King introduced the death knight hero class to World of Warcraft.
